  • YOUTH HANDSTANDS

Ages 8+ Beginners to Advanced .. handstands for our youth!
    YOUTH HANDSTANDS

Handstands and acrobatic discipline date back from the most ancient of times that requires the balancing acrobat to execute various moves and acrobatics while balancing on the hands or head, either on the ground or on virtually any type of apparatus.

We make handstands FUN! And remember that handstands are fundamentally a must in the circus arts!

All handbalancers are welcome to come!

    Beginner Class

The beginner handstand class is open to everyone! You will be taught the basics and be given what you need to start your training in achieving a straight and strong handstand.

    Intermediate Class

To attend the intermediate handstand class the students need to be comfortable going into a handstand against the wall and coming down safely by themselves.

  • LYRA-HOOP

    LYRA-HOOP

Lyra Aerial Hoop is a metal circle that is suspended from a single point. While Climbing, inverting, rolling and turning every which way on these apparatuses, you will discover their center of gravity in many different positions.

You will learn how to move from different positions with grace and ease while gaining strength and control. On lyra you will learn all of the above with the added excitement of spinning. After growing comfortable with solo work, you can learn to work in pairs and teams to build shapes in the air, turning them inside out and upside down in poses that highlight both strength and flexibility..

    Lyra Class

The classes include a warm up, strength training, conditioning tips, and stretching. You’ll learn at your own pace and interest level. Beginners will focus on proper body position, muscle usage, basic positions, and basic balances. More advanced students will learn more difficult skills, choreography and artistry. As your strength and confidence increase, you’ll be amazed at what you are capable of doing.

    What to wear

It is important to wear clothing that covers the backs of your knees and under your arms. You will want a shirt that can be tucked in to give your back protection. Long stretch pants or footless tights and a tight-fitting top are suggested. Tighter fitting clothing that gives you full range of motion is best. Shorts are not recommended since the back of your knees will be on the bar, and loose clothing may get in the way.

    TRAPEZE

Static Trapeze is an aerial apparatus consisting of a bar hung from ropes. Unlike the flying trapeze, this one generally stays in place. Climbing, inverting, rolling and turning every which way on these apparatuses, students discover their center of gravity in many different positions.

You will learn how to move from different positions with grace and ease while gaining strength and control. On the trapeze you will learn to use the bar and ropes to pose, invert, balance and drop into thrilling positions. After growing comfortable with solo work, you can learn to work in pairs and teams to build shapes in the air, turning them inside out and upside down in poses that highlight both strength and flexibility.

  • TIGHT WIRE

Learn to walk the wire from fancy foot work, jump rope and more
    TIGHT WIRE

Tight Wire Walking is a traditional circus act performed on a narrow metal cable at various heights above the ground.

Presently we do not offer a stand alone tight-wire class but there are several students who take private and group lessons at SDCC. Please contact us for more information if your child is interested in tight-wire walking!

The cable is pulled very tight and has very little give to it. It is a challenging mental and physical activity of balance and focus. Tight Wire walkers may use props such as hoops, parasols or fans to assist with balance or add entertainment. Tight Wire is different from a slack line set up, which is usually nylon webbing that is not so tight, and has more bounce and movement.

    Tight wire

    Tight Wire

Students will take turns balancing and walking on our practice wire, a safe two feet above the ground, while being spotted by an experienced instructor. When students become comfortable walking and standing still on the wire, they may progress to turns, kneeling, sitting, dancing, or using props such as hoops or juggling clubs. Students refine their sense of balance by feeling small shifts in weight and learning to make tiny but focused adjustments to body position. Students will be given balance, strengthening and stretching activities to practice at home.

    What to Wear

Ballet or gymnastics slippers with leather soles, worn with socks, are ideal. Flat yet flexible soled shoes, such as Converse, can also work, though it is a matter of personal preference. Some people are comfortable in socks or running shoes. Shoes do need to fit snugly. Please take care to wear pants that are not too long or baggy around the ankles.

    Class Format

Classes are available as a group session of 60 minutes, with a maximum of 4 students. We will incorporate tight wire in our mulch-discipline classes.
